An announcement could soon be made by the US government that the detainee facility at Guantanamo Bay is to be shut down, and its occupants relocated to alternative military prisons. Senior administration officials, speaking yesterday, highlighted how the centre's closure could be imminent. The detainees would, they said, be moved to at least one facility belonging to the Defense Department. This, they suggested, could be the Kansas-based Fort Leavenworth, where the new inmates could subsequently face trial.
A meeting involving legal advisers and President George W. Bush's national security was scheduled for today; however, this was cancelled. A spokesman for the National Security Council, Gordon Johndroe, stated: "t's no longer on the schedule for tomorrow (Friday). Senior officials have met on the issue in the past, and I expect they will meet on the issue in the future."
Three senior officials, who remain unidentified, due to the nature of the subject matter, said the proposed shifting of Guantanamo's detainees was under consideration.
A meeting, therefore now to take place at a future date, would, according to officials in the know, likely involve the participation of Vice President Dick Chaney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff and Defence Secretary Robert Gates, among others, they said. Immediate clarification was not available as to whether this meeting would culminate in a final verdict on Guantanamo's future.
